If the goal of the Common Core is to produce students that are all on grade level, common sense tells us it is an unreachable goal, knowing we are not all the same – unless, of course, we lower the standards appreciably. It is not expected that a child with a low average I.Q. (80 – 89) should read, write, calculate at the same level as one with a very superior I.Q. (130 and above) simply because they are the same age. Surely, with all the current talk of “fairness” a reasonable citizen can see it is “unfair” to deny the low avarage children the education they deserve and to force all children into college bound tracks. This practice dooms many to develop poor self-image at best and to drop out of high school at worst. If one is placed into an environment where s/he is chronically at the nadir of academic performance for thirteen years of government schooling what else could be the end result? Common Core Standards are below the standards of many Long Island School districts: Rockville Centre, Jericho, Syosset, Great Neck, Cold Spring Harbor to name a few. Of course standards are essential for districts to establish. The Common Core Standards are not. They would be another step to Dumbing Us Down since they are lower that what we have in place..
